Daniela Peterson

Hi there, I'm a brown, immigrant woman from Chile. As a Social Worker I specialized in Public Politics that includes a Children's Rights Perspective.

In the past 14 years, I have worked with non-profits, city government, a juvenile detention center, and public schools; all experiences that gave me an in-depth and critical perspective about how to work in a community/es.

In Chattanooga, I have worked as a Community Engagement organizer and as a volunteer with several local organizations.

From those experiences, I gained a comprehensive understanding of community dynamics specifically in our city, especially relating to disenfranchised populations. Through my work in Chattanooga, I have come to understand how the placemaking process has an essential role in the inclusive development of the city.

What did it mean to be recognized with the Footprint Award?

A real surprise. I felt seen and supported. A clear sign that I have made Chattanooga my home.

 Who inspires you? Why?

A Latino man that rides his bike on Main Street. I do not know his name. You can see him on his way to work or on his way back. He uses the streets and sidewalks to ride his bike. When it's raining he still is out there. I know that he is not the only one. Riding a bike should be an option, not your only choice.

What inspires you to do your work?

The beauty of change. I do believe that together we can change and shape our environments.

What is one wish you have for Chattanooga?

It is my wish - and the main reason that I work - that we all could feel welcome in this city.
